Mapping Clutter In Situ: Broadband Results
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents experimental results of applying two methods to help mitigate the seabed clutter problem by spatially isolating significant reverberant features in situ: 1) a “clutter mapping” technique applied to broadband (400 to 2500 Hz) acoustic data collected in the vicinity of the Stanton Banks off of Scotland during the T-MAST 02 experiment; and 2) the use of a cardioid receiver array on the Malta Plateau off of Sicily during the Boundary 2004 experiment. It is shown that while there are a number of correspondences between strong clutter events and the leading edges of known bathymetric features, there are also a number of clutter returns with no obvious corresponding bathymetric relief. The implications are that relying on archival bathymetric (and wreck) databases will in general be insufficient, and that in-situ reverberation assessments need to be conducted that yield not just the mean (intensity) characteristics, but also the statistics.

Relevance of polynomial matrix decompositions to broadband blind signal separation
The polynomial matrix EVD (PEVD) is an extension of the conventional eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) to polynomial matrices. The purpose of this article is to provide a review of the theoretical foundations of the PEVD and to highlight practical applications in the area of broadband blind source separation (BSS). Based on basic definitions of polynomial matrix terminology such as parahermitian a...

The experimental approach is based upon exploiting both long-range observations of clutter and shortrange, or direct-path observations (seabed scattering and reflection) of the features that give rise to the clutter. Direct path observations offer two significant advantages: a) the uncertainties associated with propagation (through a generally sparsely sampled ocean) are minimized, and b) the m...

In radar detection, the existence of the clutter edge in the reference samples considerably degrades the performance of the detector. Hence, clutter edge estimation not only improves the CFAR detectors, but also can be used for partitioning the various areas of the clutter in the clutter map. In this paper, we propose an adaptive algorithm for detecting the clutter edge between two Weibull clut...

LONG TERM GOALS The long term goals associated with these projects are to: 1) improve performance of low-mid frequency active sonar systems against clutter 2) assess and characterize uncertainty in the tactical naval environment. OBJECTIVES The objectives of the first project are to understand the mechanisms that lead to clutter and develop models that predict the temporal/spatial/frequency dep...
